Terminology

OnLAN Messenger contacts - all physical and/or juridical persons, whose contact information is registered in the database.
All contacts are subdivided into visible and invisible entities in the lists.

Visible contacts are subdivided into:
- messenger users;
- e-mail contacts.

Messenger users - visible contacts, who can exchange instant messages, e-mail messages and files.
E-mail contacts - visible contacts, who are either physical or (more often) juridical persons (for example, organisation branches). Messenger users can send messages to these contacts' e-mails. The login for such contacts should be loaded into the database in the following format: only_email (see Modifying user registration data). The option of loading the client under an e-mail contact login is not supported.

Invisible contacts - employees, who do not have access to the messenger. These can be juridical department workers, who are registered in the database as e-mail contacts, or employees, who do not have a personal computer (e.g. cleaners, couriers). All information on these employees is shown in the OnLAN Messenger birthdays list (see OnLAN Messenger User Manual). Such users' login names should be loaded into the database in the following format: no_login (see Modifying user registration data).

The OnLAN Messenger terminology refers to all users, who are registered in the database and able to exchange instant messages, files and e-mails, as contacts. Furthermore, two contact types are used: fully functional and limited contacts.

Fully functional contacts (registered in the database as physical persons) can exchange instant messages, files and e-mails.

Limited contacts (more often registered in the database as juridical persons) can only exchange e-mails. The login names for such contacts should be loaded into the database in the following format: only_email (see Modifying user information data). The option of using a limited contact's login name to load the client is not supported.

All OnLAN Messenger contacts are assigned the "OFFLINE" status by default. When the client is loaded under one of the login names, that login name status is changed to "ONLINE", and changed back to "OFFLINE", once the user is logged out.

An online user is assigned the "ACTIVE" status by default. An active online contact possesses all rights, as determined by his group politics (see further) and type. OnLAN Messenger server tools allow you to change any user's status from "ACTIVE" to "BLOCKED" and back (see Managing online users). Blocked contacts cannot exchange messages with active contacts, even if their status is "ONLINE".

Online contacts also have an additional value - modes, which is setup by means of the client (see OnLAN Messenger User Manual):
- "NOCONTACT" - is assigned, when the screensaver is activated, after a predetermined idle period;
- "LOCKED" - is assigned in cases, when the workstation becomes locked;
- manually set modes are: "AWAY", "WORKING", "BUSY", "DND", "CONFERENCE", "PLAYING".

The OnLAN Messenger database can also contain information on employees, who do not have the right to log in to the messenger. These can be employees of juridical departments, registered in the database as limited contacts, or employees who do not possess a personal computer (e.g. cleaners, couriers). Information on such contacts is displayed in the birthdays list of the OnLAN Messenger (see OnLAN Messenger User Manual). Login names of such users must be entered into the database in the following format: no_login (see Modifying user registration data).

All OnLAN Messenger contacts, registered in the database, are subdivided into standard groups, which correspond with the company's departments, branches, as well as independant organisations within a corporation. All information on creating and modifying the standard groups is provided in the Modifying standard groups chapter.

The Contact list includes fully functional and limited contacts, subdivided into standard groups and is displayed in the client interface, providing the user with a comfortable and easily accessible tool for instant message, file and e-mail exchange.

The OnLAN Messenger contact group policies determine the aggregate of some system actions and user rights, applicable to particular user accounts. Every contact in the database must be assigned one of the existing policies; thus, you are able to subdivide users into different groups with diffferent rights (e.g. administrators and users). There is a list of rules that you can implement within group policies (policy keys). This list allows you to either increase or decrease the number of group policies, by means of creating new ones (or deleting existing ones), as well as allowing you to modify the policies. Some user rights can be setup by means of the client (see Client setup), but the "Apply policy" server operation resets individual client rights settings. All information on creating, modifying and applying group policies can be found in the Modifying group policies chapter.
